Kantha is characterized by simple running stitches that create intricate motifs, patterns, and designs on the fabric. Typically, artisans use a basic running stitch along the edges of old sarees and dhotis, which are then layered and stitched together to form quilts or blankets. The motifs often depict everyday life, nature, or mythological stories, reflecting the cultural heritage and traditions of the region.

Originally, Kantha embroidery was used to reinforce old fabrics and add warmth to blankets, but over time, it has evolved into a highly artistic form of expression. Today, Kantha is not only utilized in blankets and quilts but also in sarees, dupattas, and other garments, as well as in home decor items like pillow covers and wall hangings.
